THE SETUP
District Manager, law enforcement ranger Anna Pigeon is called from the wedding of her (Black) field ranger Lonnie Reston to Mt. Locust (a historic inn on the Natches Trace Parkway, in Mississippi), where the body of "good ole boy" Doyce Barnett was just found. Coincidentally, a slave cemetery is located on park land between Mt. Locust and the Barnett family home, and Raymond Barnett, Doyce's younger brother is the local mortician, running for county sheriff. Randy Thigpen (think "pig pen"), another of Anna's field rangers who has gone far out of his way to make Anna's life miserable--since he had expected to be promoted to District Ranger. Randy will be retiring in a few months, and is also running for county sheriff. The third of Anna's field rangers, Barth Denkus, has been working to identify the graves in the slave cemetery. The current county sheriff is Clintus Jones. Anna's boyfriend is Paul Wilson, an Episcopal priest and the sheriff of an adjoining county. We soon learn that Doyce had three alleged poker buddies: Badger Lundtsrom, Martin Crowley, and Herm Thornton. That's the setup. Confused yet? It gets worse--there are about a dozen minor characters I haven't mentioned.

DEVELOPMENT containing possible spoilers:
Later Anna twice escape terrifying attempts on her life. As it turns out Doyces "poker buddies" are actually poachers. The sign identifying some graves in the slave cemetery are desecrated. Raymond Barnett is building a child's coffin, although no children have died in the area recently. Back in the 1860s, a freeman with the last name Reston had been a partner in the cabinet business with the Barnett family.

CRITIQUE
This is one of the very best Barr novels, and that is saying a great deal. The mystery is intriguing and is uncovered at just the right pace. Several seemingly independent plot-lines converge with a crash. The imagery and characterization are brilliantly vivid. For the reflective reader, Anna's incisive mussing will stay with you for years. This is my third reading, and it just gets better. Buy a hardcover.

Hunting Season An Anna Pigeon Novel Nevada Barr Books Reviews

Hunting Season is a trip back to the Natchez Trace in Mississippi. I enjoyed Barr's Deep South and it was nice to return to this interesting section of the country. Anna Pigeon is again forced to deal with the established "ol' boy's network" while she tries to solve the murder of Doyce Barnette, the brother of the local mortician. Some of the characters in Deep South are revisited...Randy Thigpen, Barth Dinkins and Anna's love interest, Sheriff Paul Davidson. It is a little frustrating to see Anna waffle around in her prickly self when it comes to Paul...afraid of being too needy. I want to grab Anna's hand and make her reach out and grab Paul before he can get away. That is just one example of how real to life Barr has managed to make these characters. There are some of Barr's trademark descriptions of the surrounding landscape; maybe not as much as in her previous books, but what is included is quality. She uses descriptions of smells (pine, moldy leaves, etc.) more than any author I can think of, and it sounds a little odd, I know, but that, more than anything else, brings me instantly into each scene. I enjoy NB's sense of humor and it is sprinkled sparingly throughout this story, but I long for more. It's difficult to avoid comparing one book to another in a series such as this. I admit I have done so on occasion. But I think this book stands on it's own and can and will be enjoyed by readers who are new to this author. However, for those readers who haven't read Nevada Barr's previous books, you are in for a real treat.
Anna Pigeon has had some complex and dangerous missions throughout her Park Ranger career, but this was her toughest and most baffling. Again, death neared her doorstep before grumpiness and stubbornness helped her overcome very terrifying circumstances.
NO SPOILER HERE! I will not give you a “Reader’s Digest” condensed version of this book.
Nevada Barr’s Anna Pigeon series is an exceptional creation. It is unique in that each one of the books is set in a different National Park, though there are some doubles. Ms. Barr’s descriptions of the park, the inner workings of the National Park System, history, environment, flora, fauna and applicable issues make reading these mysteries a fulfilling adventure. Like many such series, it will serve the reader well to read them in order. This isn’t necessary as each mystery will stand alone quite well. But Anna’s personal story is the thread that makes the series complete. Anna herself is a masterful creation. Human, flawed, introspective, complex, she is the window through which the reader sees much of the beauty our National Park System has to offer. From Mesa Verde, the Florida Keys, Lake Superior to environments that are dry, wet, cold, and hot, the drastically changing settings and Anna’s evolving personal life keep this series fresh and engaging. It will be no surprise to the reader that Ms. Barr is a former Park Ranger. I’ll admit I haven’t read the last three books in the series – with good reason. They are my emergency kit. When I have waded through a piece of substandard literary junk and need a dose of quality writing, an Anna Pigeon mystery is a perfect fix.
