...to an excellent series! It's not unusual for me to read a whole series all in a row, or for me to enjoy them all. What IS unusual, practically unheard of even, is for me to really LOVE the ending. After all, how many ways can a story end? Many conclusions are reasonably satisfying, some very much so, but it's exceedingly rare for me to want to applaud one. This is one of those. After an exceptional series, read in a week, I had kind of steeled myself for a good ending, nothing special (since that's what so many are). This one? Wonderful! Enormously satisfactory, great even! I felt much as I had at the end of "Sunshine," by Robin McKinley, probably the best book I've read in the last two years, and one of my all-time favorite books. Unexpected, interesting, and in keeping with the tone of all three books. Others have described them, so I won't go into details, but it's enough for me to say this: read it. The whole series. It is well worth the time, and while parts of each book have similarities to other sword and sorcery novels, I have not read anything quite like it in all my many, MANY years of dedication to speculative fiction (which encompasses fantasy and science fiction in all their amazing forms).
Truly excellent!

Last Stand The Black Mage Book 4 Rachel E Carter Books Reviews
So I really enjoyed this book for the most part but I just had such a hard time getting through it unlike the other ones in the series which I couldn’t put down. Plus some spousal abuse that was just brushed aside like it was nothing personally just made me feel uncomfortable. I know what the situation was but it just made me feel icky and left me with a bad taste in my mouth. I almost stopped reading but decided to go ahead and push through. Well the abuse was pretty much just looked over and easily forgiven because the situation was understood as to why it occurred. Once again, it just left me feeling icky because of justifying it. I really didn’t even want a happily ever after in this book because of it. I really hate going on about it because the overall story, series, and conclusion is really good but it is the reason for four stars instead of five. I hate being “that person” but I just couldn’t shake that off unfortunately and it just out a dark shadow on over all the good parts on it for me.
I've read several books, of various genres, every week for the past 15 years and I can honestly say this was the best series I've ever read. If could give it more than 5 stars, I would. I love every single thing about the story Rachel E. Cater wrote. Her story about these two mages made me feel everything they were going through, from laughing, to cheering, to frustration, to loving, to crying...and crying..and crying....and there was so much humor, determination, love, hate, rivalry, deceit, misunderstanding, magic, devotion, respect, change, redemption.. i cant really explain it. Her story came alive in my head and heart. This will forever be the best story every written and i would recommend it to anyone who loves a beautifully written story. (read on for a bit of a spoiler) and I will always remember in my heart, the struggle of a "lowborn" mage who had a nearly impossible dream, who became someone she never thought possible and more, found her true love who unfailingly loves her back, fought (sometimes literally) for said love of her life, and after so much struggle, pain, and deceit..she finally made her happy ending a reality. I hope this author never stops writing. I am foreevvver a fan of this story and its author.
I finished this series last week and I'm still riding the high. I've read 100s of books and lots of genres - though magic is my favorite. I can't even bring myself to start another book because I don't want to wash away this books lasting impressions. I'm going to first say READ THE WHOLE SERIES!!! Now I'll review based on after readings books 1-3. This last book is a giant crescendo!!! My emotions were all over the place! I wanted to cry at every moment! The author has done a wonderful job of pulling me into these characters lives & wanting to believe in them. Just writing this review is making me feel nostalgic. This is supposed to be YA, I'm guessing that because there's no heavy sexual content - but there is some brutality and I would say you need to be over 15 to read it. The first book starts off innocent enough and has a bit of a Harry Potter feel but this isn't childs play. This isn't about an academy and students being heroes. There's a much bigger picture and more lives at stake than just the main characters. I could go on and on but I'm not. One of my top 10 series!!!! Along with Divergent (minus the last book, terrible writing) Hunger Games, Sword of Truth, Dresden Files, Kingfountain Series, & The Elemental Series.
